In this ironic Russian drama, a man's thoughts of revenge turn to thoughts of reconciliation as he comes to know his intended victim a little better. The story is set in contemporary Russia following the destruction of the Communist regime. Nikolai is a slightly shady but successful businessman; he and his brand new wife are happily honeymooning on a train when he suddenly recognizes the sleeping car attendant as Oleg, the judge who gave him seven years for black-market trading during the Soviet era. The still angry Nikolai immediately begins plotting revenge against Oleg. He first feigns friendship with Oleg and ends up renting a room in the ex-judge's house. Then he gets Oleg a part-time job at one of his warehouses. Once Oleg trusts him, Nikolai has the town tart crawl into the older man's bed so that his wife will find Oleg in a compromising position. The ploy works and she leaves him.
Set at the turn of the century it presents a story of a famous Polish athlete, Zbyszko Cyganiewicz. It begins in a small town where a traveling circus attracts a shy boy into a phony wrestling game to please the crowds. The youth, however, takes his strength seriously, eventually defeating a name wrestler in a fair match. Angered circus manager fires him; he leaves happily due to two wrestler brothers who were harassing him. The wrestler goes on to fame, performing in the world's top arenas, and one day is serenaded by a tenor from the crowd. Fame brings him women and admirers but he is uncompromising on his profession. He has his revenge on one of his tormentors defeating him in the ring. One day, attending a game in a tuxedo, he is challenged by another of the brothers and drawn into a brutal game, in course of which he kills his opponent. Thus his career ends.

The film’s plot is set during the war between Poland and the Soviet Russia (1919 – 1921). Wartime brutally encroaches on the life of a couple in love – Franek and Hanka. The Bolshevik troops cause damage to Polish villages and manor houses, and in one of the manor houses the invaders have a carousel. Luckily, the Polish cavalry comes to the relief just in time. Unable to wait passively, Hanka becomes a sister of mercy in one of the field hospitals near Vilnius, while Franek gains wide recognition after capturing a Russian spy.
