A spin-off of the ABC Daytime soap opera General Hospital, the show is SOAPnet's first original scripted drama series and follows the nighttime adventures of familiar and new characters around the hospital. As of March 2008, the first season of the series was "SOAPnet's most watched series ever," with ABC Daytime and SOAPnet President Brian Frons noting that Night Shift drew more than 1 million new viewers to the channel during its first season. With its reruns gaining higher ratings than those of General Hospital on SOAPnet, a second season was expected, though Frons noted that the same crew producing two shows had taken its toll. It was announced in May 2008 that Lisa de Cazotte would serve as Executive producer for season two, joined by Head writer Sri Rao. The 14 new episodes of Night Shift began taping in high-definition in June 2008, with the series airing Tuesdays at 11 p.m. and premiering on July 22, 2008. SOAPnet said the second season "will feature new and returning characters as well as the return of 'legacy' characters from GH. In addition, the continuity between story lines on Night Shift and GH will match." The second season finished its run on October 21, 2008.

General Hospital

General Hospital is a British daytime soap opera produced by ATV, which ran on ITV from 1972 to 1979. It was modelled after the American drama of the same name. In 1972, ITV started to broadcast programmes on weekday afternoons, triggering a new wave of productions to fill out the extended schedules. Among the first of these shows, which were aimed at giving advertisers access to 'stay at home mums' and housewives in general, were the long-running rural soap Emmerdale Farm and the twice-weekly medical drama General Hospital. Set in a fictional Midlands town, the series followed the romantic and professional lives of its doctors and nurses. While the location and the characters names had been changed, in most other respects General Hospital was almost identical to its predecessor, Emergency - Ward 10, a deliberate attempt to recreate its success. In 1975, after 270 twice-weekly episodes, General Hospital was given a primetime slot on Friday evening. The move saw the episode lengths double from 30 to 60 minutes, with each episode being more self-contained, while on-screen medical procedures, including detailed scenes of surgery, became more prominent. Amongst the regular cast of the series was actor Tony Adams who played Doctor Neville Bywaters; he also appeared as Adam Chance in Crossroads. Among the other familiar faces to appear was Lynda Bellingham, who gained national fame as the mother in a series of commercials for Oxo stock cubes, and later as Helen Herriot in the series All Creatures Great and Small, based on the books by James Herriot. Other notable regulars included Carmen Munroe, who was also a regular presenter in the Play School children's programme team; and a young, Sally Knyvette, who went on to appear in Blakes 7 and Emmerdale Farm.

The General 1998

The General was a BBC fly-on-the-wall Television series hosted by Yvette Fielding, Chris Serle and Heather Mills. Based at Southampton General Hospital, the programme tracked the progress of selected patients, including outpatients, at the hospital. The series was broadcast live every weekday on BBC One, in a daytime slot. 61 episodes of the programme were aired in total; 58 of them in 1998, and the other three in 2002. The original director of the series was Dave Heather. As well as the presenting team tracking patients and staff in the hospital, the programme also featured Heather Mills abseiling down the side of the hospital and demonstrating various uses for her prosthesis. However, it was alleged some years after the series finished that Mills was appointed to the presenting role under false pretences, having claimed that newspaper articles written by a journalist namesake were written by herself. The show also featured occasional celebrity guest appearances, including a visit from endurance expert Mike Stroud. The programme was subsequently renamed City Hospital, continuing with exactly the same format, initially with the same presenters but subsequently presented by Nick Knowles and Gaby Roslin. City Hospital later moved from Southampton General Hospital to Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals in London, with the presentation team changing; subsequent presenters included Jeremy Milnes and Nadia Sawalha.

General Motors Theatre

General Motors Theatre was a Canadian television anthology series, which ran on CBC Television under its various titles from 1953 until 1961. First transmitted under the sponsored title on October 5, 1954, a new 60-minute drama would be presented each week. As suggested by the title, the programme was sponsored by the General Motors automobile company. It was effectively the same series as the unsponsored CBC Theatre, which had run its first season from December 1, 1953 to April 20, 1954, with General Motors becoming title sponsor for the second season. The series was a breeding ground for writing and directing talent such as William Kotcheff, Donald Jack and Arthur Hailey. One of Hailey's plays for the strand, Flight into Danger, was later remade as the feature film Zero Hour!, and was also screened by the BBC in the United Kingdom. It was a major factor in General Motors Theatre producer — and CBC Supervisor of Drama — Sydney Newman moving to work in the UK, where he later worked on and created anthology series similar to General Motors Theatre such as Armchair Theatre and The Wednesday Play. The series also supported the earlier careers of many Canadian actors such as James Doohan who played a role in the GM Presents production of "The Night they Killed Joe Howe".
