The Newlyn School of artists flourished at the beginning of the 20th Century and the film focuses on the wild and bohemian Lamorna Group, which included Alfred Munnings and Laura and Harold Knight. The incendiary anti-Modernist Munnings, now regarded as one of Britain's most sought-after artists, is at the centre of the complex love triangle, involving aspiring artist Florence Carter-Wood and Gilbert Evans, the land agent in charge of the Lamorna Valley estate. True - and deeply moving - the story is played out against the timeless beauty of the Cornish coast, in the approaching shadow of The Great War.
"February was photographed during the first weeks of early spring in San Francisco. For me there is a haunted sense of restlessness in its form, some desire for a new freedom, a fresh sense of cinema. It feels to me to be the conclusion of an exploration that began with Triste, some 20 films earlier. What will follow, I do not know." - Nathaniel Dorsky

Biting cold, danger and toil everywhere. People do not live in this winterly realm, they survive; sometimes by mere chance: While they are away hunting the wolf, the two brothers evade the deportation of their entire village by Soviet authorities, accompanied by many casualties. Again, they follow a trail - only instead of a wolf’s trail, they now follow one of footsteps and blood. The hostile mountains and dangerous nature, which seem to hold no love for men, suddenly appear in a different light: It is man himself who holds the least love for his fellow human beings.
