This Week 2003

This Week is a current affairs and politics TV programme in the United Kingdom on the BBC, screened on Thursday evenings, hosted by former Sunday Times editor Andrew Neil alongside former Conservative Member of Parliament and Minister Michael Portillo, and, until October 2010, by then-backbench left-wing Labour MP Diane Abbott, and by a left-leaning guest panellist in rotation thereafter, with Abbott making occasional guest appearances. This Week came about after a major review of BBC political programmes, and replaced the nightly political review programme Despatch Box, for which Andrew Neil was the sole presenter in its later years, and which, in turn, was a replacement for The Midnight Hour. The show has a more light-hearted tone than most political programming and prides itself on being "punchy, irreverent, satirical". This is aided by the fact that neither of the regular panellists is constrained by party politics, as former panellist Diane Abbott was noted for rebelling against the former Labour government and Portillo has left the House of Commons. The two were ostensibly an "odd couple" coming from different sides of the political spectrum; however, they have a long-standing friendship dating back to when both attended grammar school in Harrow, even appearing in a production of Macbeth together.

The programme is considered a significant element of the satire boom in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. It broke ground in comedy through lampooning the establishment and political figures. A Week of It

A Week of It is a New Zealand television series which ran from 1977 to 1979. A comedy sketch show, the series relied heavily on political satire, and as such was often written very shortly before it screened. Although it only ran for three years, the show was very popular, and launched the careers of many New Zealand entertainers, most notably David McPhail and Jon Gadsby. The show was screened on South Pacific Television, with the first episode airing on 4 July 1977, and was groundbreaking for New Zealand television. Despite satirical series lampooning current politics having run overseas for many years, they were a novelty in New Zealand, with only John Clarke's creation Fred Dagg having preceded A Week of It. The show's regular cast included McPhail, Gadsby, singer and comedian Annie Whittle, straight-man/introducer Ken Ellis, Chris McVeigh, and Peter Rowley. The show's main writers were A.K. Grant and McPhail, with other writing input coming from Ellis, Gadsby, McVeigh, and Peter Hawes. The show was directed by Tony Holden. Much of the satire revolved around politicians of the time, with David McPhail regularly impersonating then-prime minister Sir Robert Muldoon, and Peter Rowley appearing as the Leader of the Opposition Bill Rowling. The show featured musical numbers as well, many of them performed by Gadsby and/or Whittle.
