He takes a cigarette out of a case and puts it into his mouth. He lights it then moves a newspaper away from the easel to reveal Jerry behind it. Jerry protests: "Half a minute, boss. I was reading the football news!" Sid shakes his head "No time for that now - we've got to WORK!" Jerry replies "I'd rather play football!" Sid draws Jerry a beach ball. Jerry attempts to kick it but falls over backwards instead. He looks stunned. A question mark appears above his head which turns into a ball then falls on Jerry's head. Sid then cuts around the football so that when Jerry kicks it, it moves. The ball bounces along and Jerry runs after it. The ball eventually crashes into the fence around a football stadium. Screwball Football 1939

A series of gags hung on a football game. The running gag is a baby licking an ice-cream cone; the portly man sitting next to him keeps stealing licks. We see the warmups (a kicker punts sitting in a chair; three other kickers break into a chorus line). The coin flip: the players pile on. The kickoff: the ball stays put and the man holding it is kicked. A re-kick: one player is used like a golf club by another. Some razzle-dazzle on the scrimmage line. The QB fades (literally) for a pass. Half-time: a quick show by the marching band; the team beats up their coach; a cheerleader rallies his team's supporters: one man. Second half: A touchdown run is interrupted for a commercial announcement; when completed, a cheerleader literally yells his head off. A quick montage of action, then the final gun which comes from the ice-cream tot, finally fed up with his neighbor.

Football Freaks

Football crazy, football mad. Don’t watch this off-beat jukebox cartoon expecting any conventional soccer action. Equal parts Disney, Dali and Duchamp, this abstract mix of black and white photos and alternative comix style animation is accompanied by a medley of doo-wop classics and documentary soundbites. The film is certainly an extreme departure for those familiar with the more conventional output of the Halas & Batchelor studio, best known for their feature-length version of George Orwell’s Animal Farm (1954). Paul Vester was one of a number of sixties art school graduates that brought a mix of pop art and illustration influences to the company whilst it was undergoing a brief change in its ownership. As a warning, in keeping with its progressive, adult style there is some brief nudity at the end of the film.
