Mouna Rudo was born and raised among the Seediq people, an indigenous tribe in Taiwan, and as he grew to be a man he became a member of the Seediq Bale, a courageous band of native warriors. However, Rudo's way of life is threatened under the yoke of occupying forces from Japan, who took over the nation in 1895. As Rudo sees the traditions and honor of his people stripped away, he realizes the time has come to fight back, and in 1930 he brings together a group of former Seediq Bale soldiers, many of whom have been reduced to infighting, and molds them into a revolutionary army. Rudo and his comrades make their stand when they confront Japanese occupation troops at a youth athletic event, leading to a violent confrontation between the Seediq forces and their oppressors. Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale - Part 1: The Sun Flag is Part one of the two-part, four-hour Taiwanese edition of the film Warriors of the Rainbow.
In Frances Stark's Cat Videos 1999 - 2002, the artist's cats are featured playing and lounging in her apartment. The videos are a result of Stark being inspired by the visual pleasure of watching her cats and the way their movement changed her perception of her domestic surroundings. By utilizing the soundtrack of one diegetic song per video, the life of the domestic cat - which usually involves no plans or action - is framed, and then elevated as a work of art. The videos, produced pre-Youtube in 1999-2002, predict our current extensive consumption and emotional responses to online cat videos, and unintentionally explore the rise of rapid attention span as a response to current technologies.
Versions is an ongoing project by Oliver Laric that deals with historical and contemporary ideas relating to image hierarchies. It proposes that present methods of creative production challenge the hierarchy of an authentic or auratic ‘original’ image. Rather than privileging a primary object, Versions suggests a re-direction for image making, one in which bootlegs, copies and remixes increasingly usurp ‘originals’ in an age of digital production.
Versions 2010 is the second in an an ongoing project that takes on different forms including collaged video clips with documentary style speech (as seen here), casts of religious figurines and bootleg reproductions of books covering Greek influence on Roman sculpture. The project looks at the concept of image hierarchies; the idea that some images are more important or more relevant than others, or even more valid than copies or replicas of themselves. Versions highlights that the idea of there being one original image is problematic. Laric acknowledges a non hierarchical form of image creation, one in which bootlegs, copies and remixes sit alongside ‘originals’. There is no hierarchy between the sculpture and its various copies they are ‘same, same but different’
Versions 2012 is the third in an ongoing series by Oliver Laric
