In 2011, a litter of Blue Heeler puppies were dropped off anonymously at a dog shelter in Kentucky. The two males were named "Trooper Dan Dahl" and "Trooper Howie Peterson", after the Troopers on the show. The female dogs were named after Troopers Aileen Witrosky, Amy Bowen and Anne Sears, who have all been featured on the show. Although the show is aired in many countries, the National Geographic Channel has so far not released DVDs of the series outside of the United States.

The program premiered on May 8, 2008 and aired one 13-episode season. The series was produced by Moore Huntley Productions, whose previous programs include several other programs about Alaska. In 1980, the U.S. government banned new human occupation in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, a protected area, home to thousands of native animals and pristine terrain spanning roughly the size of South Carolina. Currently, only a handful of families spread across seven permitted cabins are allowed to remain in the refuge. Within less than 100 years, all remaining permits will reach expiration, and there will be no human presence left.
